ART 102: Contemporary Art History
A survey of late modernism and contemporary art movements in American and international culture from 1945 to the present. Emphasis will be placed on the New York School, Minimalism, Conceptual and Performance Art, Pop Art, Neo-Expressionism, Installation Art and Post Modern trends in contemporary expression. Recommended for all visual arts majors.
- Analyze an art object in terms of the elements and principles of design used by the artist.
- Identify and analyze the religious, sociopolitical and cultural factors that have influenced the development of art.
ART 120 / 120H: Beginning Drawing
This course will emphasize the perceptual and technical skill of drawing by use of observational and drawing methodologies. The student will render natural and artificial forms as simple and complex volumes using a variety of media on paper.
- Demonstrate effective use of drawing methodology in the rapid and rendered depiction of natural and mechanical subjects: executed in proportion, with use of perspective and emphasis of line dimension.
- Use value to model the effects of light and render the subject as a three-dimensional illusion on a flat surface.
Effectively use a variety of drawing materials to investigate varied art concepts
ART 130: Painting 1
Prerequisite: Art A110 and A120
Students will develop the basic craft of painting landscape, still life, and the figure using selected media. Students will apply and practice a creative approach to painting to achieve an understanding of color, space, form, and composition. (CAN ART 10)
- Demonstrate the historical use of oil paint utilizing both direct and indirect methods in approaching the painting problem.
- Apply different techniques that effectively use brush stroke, oil paint application, color usage, and compositional emphasis in traditional still, landscape, and figurative subjects.
ART 131: Art A131
Prerequisite: Art A130
A continuation of Art A130 with emphasis on personal expression, painting styles, and methodology. Alternate painting mediums introduced. This course may be taken three times.
- Demonstrate how painting methodology as it relates to the historical development of painting as a document of visual impression, emotional expression, and symbolic or allegorical approaches.
- Demonstrate skill development in the use of oil, and/or acrylic or alkyd paint as direct or indirect approaches to the painting problem.
- Demonstrate different stylistic techniques that effectively investigate brush stroke, paint application, color usage, and composition.
ART 235: Experimental Painting
Advisory: Art A110
Exploration and presentation of painting using contemporary mixed media and materials in non-traditional contexts for the purpose of developing individual expressive directions. Experimentation with various painting supports and non-traditional media. This course may be taken four times.
- Demonstrate knowledge of experimental painting techniques and the genre.
- Create an experimental artwork utilizing techniques and multiple forms of media appropriate to experimental work.
